Notes for Alexander STINNETT

BURIED CEM. ON ROAD TO BRADLEY CHAPEL ON DUNN CREEK IN JOANS COVE

Alexander was eleven or twelve years old at the time of his mother's second marriage. He was his mother's favorite child and when she gave him the family farm it caused an uproar in the rest of the Stinnett family. The other children later caused trouble over this and it must have gone on for quite a while. There are court records where they paid monetary sums to several of his children to cover their inheritance from John. As late as 1874, Elizabeth appeared in court and swore she had made and signed a deed for fifty acres of land to Alexander in 1866.

From the Minutes of the New Salem Baptist Church: '...Took up a case against Brother Alexander Stinnett for fornication and finding no proof he was acquitted for the Same.

Notes for Samuel STINNETT

Photo from the collection of Debbie Harper.

Found on the Titus Co., Texas 1850 Census Roll 915, Page 101.

Samuel Stinnett was the second child of Samuel and Elizabeth (Nichols) Stinnett. He was born October 10, 1822 in Hardin County, Tennessee. The Stinnett's were Primitive Baptists. He married Alpha Loggins there on November 3, 1841 and moved to McNairy Co. County, Tennessee and then McMinn County, Tennessee. In February 1846 the family left for Texas (this interesting story is recounted in the biography of Martha Stinnett, his daughter). He settled initially in Marshall, Texas; then moved to Blackjack Grove, Upshur County, Texas. They moved to Titus Co., Hopkins Co., and finally to a farm 7 miles west of Weatherford, Texas in Parker County.

Sam Stinnett joined the Confederate Army as First Sargent at age 42 years. His unit was Captain J. S. Culwell's Company, Company B, Parker County 1st Regiment District, Texas State Troops, Major William Quayle commanding. His name mysteriously disappears from the muster rolls in July 1864. Family legend is recounted by Anne Hunt (relationship and source of newsprint clipping are unknown): "Samuel Stinnett deserted the Texas Calvary in 1864 to join the Union Army `because he disagreed with the calvary's political beliefs' according to family legend. The story is that Stinnett later became ill while serving in a northern state. He started home, but died at the house of a Missouri cousin." The background is clarified somewhat in another account. With the nation at war and Indians causing problems, a group of men began training for military service some time before the Confederate Army took over. Several weeks before this, Samuel Stinnett knew what was coming. He was a quiet, religious and patriotic man. He knew that he could not conscientiously go to war against the country for which his father had served in the War of 1812, and other ancestors before in the Revolution. Neither slavery nor states rights were an issue for him in West Texas. Knowing too that his son James and son-in-law William Erwin would be on the side of the Confederacy, he made the heart-breaking decision. So, in the dead of winter, leaving his family, he made the long and hazardous journey to the border state of Missouri. Although no one has found a record of his enlistment in the Federal Army, there is little doubt that this was his intention. Later, his wife Alpha Loggins Stinnett received the fateful letter. Sam Stinnett had died. The letter was post-marked Rollo, Missouri. His death is given as January 26, 1864. He still appeared on the muster rolls of his Confederate unit on February 1864; apparently they were unaware of his whereabouts. Sam Stinnett's death is shrouded in mystery, apparently an embarrassment to his family of Southern sympathizers. The situation only emphasizes the divisiveness of this war that pitted brother against brother, son against father several times in our family's history.

Notes for Martha Elizabeth STINNETT

This source, in turn, cites the records of the Pioneer Association of Parker County, organized 1891 whose membership criteria included living in the county on Jan. 1, 1861. Herein in the "Lady Member Roll" is the listing for Mrs. M. E. Erwin, noting also that she arrived in Texas in January1846 and in Parker Co. in December 1855.The county of her birth is at variance with other sources. However, it is the only one that might be directly attributable to her.

The same will was filed twice, under both numbers. Her assets were two properties in Eastland Co. of 222.5 and 320 acres valued at $3,337.50 and $1,600.00. She had $320 in cash in the bank, various notes due her for$1,750 and other borrowed properties worth $180. Thus the total real and monetary estate was $7,187.50

Notes for Samuel Henry STINNETT

Portales Valley News: "S. H. (Uncle Henry) Stinnett died at the family home in West Portales January 6th, at 11 p.m. internment was in the Portales cemetery at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 8. Mr. Stinnett had been ill for the past month or six weeks and up until last Friday was thought to be on the road to recovery, when the change for the worse came, and complications set up from the flu. ... Deceased leaves a wife, five sons, seven daughters, seventeen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren. "Uncle Henry" as he was familiarly called, was a typical pioneer, having lived on the frontier of West Texas and New Mexico all his life. His parents moved from Tennessee to Hopkins county, Texas in 1852, where Uncle Henry was born January 29, 1854. His parents soon moved to Parker county, Texas, being among the first settlers of Parker county. This part of Texas at that time was thinly settled and human life was in danger on account of Indian depredations, and many people were massacred. Schools were unknown. In early life his father died in the Civil War. At the age of seventeen, Uncle Henry volunteered his services in the Texas Rangers, where he experienced many hardships fighting the red man back and protecting his state, which made it possible for us to have the peaceful and prosperous country which we enjoy today. He helped to organize Parker county, and resided there continuously for forty years. At the age of twenty five, Mr. Stinnett was united in marriage to Miss Almedia Hancock of Weatherford, Texas. To this union were born seven children. Three died in youth. Those surviving are Sam J. Stinnett of Portales, Charles H. Stinnett of Portales, Mrs. E. J. Bilberry of Spur, Texas; Mrs. L. S. Bilberry of Dickens, Texas. His first wife died January 7, 1894. He was married again to Mrs. Mary Jane Woodburn of Strawn, Texas, September 1897. To this union were born four daughters and two sons, whose names are as follows: Marion M. Stinnett of Portales, Mrs. W. A. Watson of Medicine Lodge, Kansas; Mrs. John W. Henderson of Abilene, Texas; Rufus M. Stinnett of Portales; Miss Lucy Stinnett of Ft. Sumner, New Mexico; and Mrs. Newton Watson of Abilene, Texas. He also leaves two step-children, Arthur C. Woodburn of Portales and Mrs. R. A. Bilberry of Jacksboro, Texas. All were present at the funeral except two daughters who were prevented by illness. Uncle Henry moved with his family from Dickens county, Texas to New Mexico, August 18, 1902, locating on a homestead seven miles northwest of Portales, where he engaged in stock farming for many years. In 1920 he moved to Portales, where he has resided since. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church, became converted in early manhood and lived a conscientious Christian the remainder of his life. He always took an active part in all county, state and national affairs, and used his influence for the upbuilding of the community in which he lived. He was well and favorably known all over West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Thus, it can truly be said of this pioneer that in his passing the family has lost a devoted husband and a loving father and the community a valued citizen."

His unit fought in the "Indian Wars" in "defense against Indian depredations." There is a letter from the U.S. Senator from New Mexico encouraging an investigation of the pension. S. H. Stinnett wrote using Roosevelt County (NM) stationary.

This book describes the Texas Ranger history on the frontier. The problem is summed up on pae 25: "Under Jones the rangers, acting in co-ordination with federal troopers, finally crushed the Comanches. The struggle had been costly: in each year between 1836 and 1860 Indians killed some 200 men, women and children on the Texas frontier; between 1860 and 1875 at least 100 a year were killed or kidnapped. The advance through the expanse of Central Texas had extracted 17 white lives per mile."

since leaving military service he resides at Carterville, Texas; Vineyard City, Texas; Markley, Texas; Dickens City, Texas; and Portales, New Mexico.
