Notes for William STINNETT

Some say that William's father was William and others say Richard

"A History of Edwards County, Illinois", Volume One, 1980.
William Stennett was transported from England to Maryland in 1661. He was probably from Lincolnshire. William acquired land in Calvert County called "Stennet's Ramble". About 1750, Benjamin and James Stennett, acquired land patents in Amherst County, Virginia. This area east of the Blue Ridge was being settled by people from the coastal area. Both brothers were either grandsons or great grandsons of the original William Stennett. Benjamin, according to a record, was a carpenter. James had a son John (born before 1750). John served briefly with the county Militia in Virginia during he Revolutionary War. He moved from Amherst County, Virginia to Mercer County, Kentucky about 1794. He lived in Washington County in 1810 with his wife and a slave. John's son Charles (born before 1775), was the original Stennett in Edwards County. Charles was married before 1798 to Nancy Short; both were born in Virginia. He was living in northeastern part of Washington County, Kentucky and served in the Kentucky Militia as a Lieutenant during the War of 1812. He bought a land grant in Edwards County (Shelby Precinct) in 1817, moved there in 1824. He lived in Wayne County in 1840 and died by 1850. His children: James; John; Mary; Elizabeth; Charles Jr.; Richard; Jacob; Daniel; A. Jackson; and possibly Nancy. (1) James remained in Kentucky until after 1830, died in 1845. (2) John married either Mary Ellis in Galltin County or Mary Fowler. He seemed to be in frequent trouble with the authorities in Edwards County for gambling and mayhem. He served in the Blackhawk War. John's decendants include Joan Stennett Madden of Western Springs, Illinois, settled in Logan County about 1860 near Latham. His two sons George, moved to the McCook area of Nebraska around 1890. Robert, married Isalene Allison, daughter of Harrison Allison and granddaughter of Isaac Allison and Jane Hunt, in Bracken County, Kentucky and moved to Edwards County by 1817. Robert died in Logan County, 1905. Robert's children: James 1864 married Kate Ivy (from Richland County) they had four children - Oscar married Theresa Stein of Muscatine, Iowa, in 1917, and four children, including the writer, were born of this union. Delmas, Ruby, and Wayne; Charles 1837; Frank 1869; Bruce 1877. (3) Mary and (4) Elizabeth married brothers, Joseph and Steven Mounts. (5) Charles Jr. (born 1812) married Elizabeth Kelly and most of the present day Stennetts in Edwards County are descended from this couple. (6) Jacob and (7) A. Jackson and their respective families moved to Wayne County, Illinois, while (8) Daniel and (9) Richard moved to Red Oak, Iowa in the 1850's. Several of Richard's descendants moved to Oregon. (10) Nancy married Leonard Bond in Washington County in 1820." Any typos are probably mine. There's a little on Charles Jr. and Daniel. If anyone wants that let me know.
My line is Charles Sr. Nancy and Leonard Bond.
Hope this helps someone.
Betty Bond
