He was a World War II army veteran and belonged to both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He moved to Westfield in 1999 and previously lived in California and Agawam. He was predeceased by his wife, Bertie M. (Childress) Parsons in 2009, and two sons, Homer Orrick and James W. Orrick. He leaves a daughter, Patsy J. Strom of Agawam, thirteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and twelve great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 10 am at the Agawam Funeral Home with burial in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday 4-7pm. Donations may be made to the Noble VNA & Hospice, c/o Development Office, 77 Mill Street, Westfield, MA 01085.

Mildred (Kennedy) Gaines
Services for Mildred (Kennedy) Gaines, 80, of Grapeland will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Grapeland with Rick Kelly officiating. Burial will follow in Guiceland Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Grapeland.
Mildred (Kennedy ) Gaines passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2004 after an extended battle with cancer. Mildred was born October 13, 1923 in Elkhart. The daughter of Tom and Josephine (Brown) Kennedy. She was a graduate of Elkhart High School. On December 24, 1942 she married George Shelby Gaines. During their 52 years of marriage they had three children. Mildred was a loving and devoted wife who took an active role, alongside her husband, in all the farm and ranch activities. At the same time she was very supportive and involved with her children's school and all community endeavors. She lived her entire life in Anderson and Houston counties. Mildred was an active member of the Church of Christ.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; husband George Gaines; son Michael Steve Gaines; and a brother, Alfred Thomas Kennedy. She is survived by her eldest son Jimmie Lynn Gaines and wife Barbara of Portland; her daughter Annette Jo Gaines McElyea and husband Chris of Winnsboro; sisters Joyce Scarbrough and Bertie Salmon both of Houston, and Ruby Mae Keen of Elkhart; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Corey Nix, Troy Selman, James Gaines, Glenn Scarbrough, Paul Denman, Tammy Mays, Lucas McElyea, and Burr Hankins. Honorary pallbearers will be Clyde Bedford, George Bartee, and Cotton Jeffus.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in memory of Mildred be made to the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, or to the American Cancer Society.
For those that have been left behind, we will miss your warm smile and loving friendship always.

Just one hour after having passed his eighty-sixth birthday anniversary Evan Alexander Rex died at the home of his son-in-law, R. P. Edwards, of near Pisgah, Sunday morning, death resulting from an attack of lagriappe and the infirmities of old age.
Rev. D. H. Howerton, of this place, conducted funeral services at the Pisgah Baptist church Monday afternoon which were largely attended despite the bad roads and rather inclement weather. The pallbearers were Messrs. Henry Carpenter, John Locan Thatcher Jones, Wm. Baker, Edgar Carpenter and D. D. Hurt, Mr. Rex had been a member of the Baptist church almost 59 years and had his membership with the Pisgah church 43 years.
In the Eagle of May 9, 1913, The following sketch of "Daddie" Rex as he was lovingly known to his many relatives and acquaintances was published:
"I was born in Rowan County, North Carolina, February 12, 1830. My parents came through Tennessee into Kentucky, and into Indiana, where in 1849 I was United in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Campbell. We moved to Illinois in 1850, thence to Maries County, Mo., in 1853, from there to Jasper county in 1860, and came to Cooper county in 1862. I then enlisted in the rebel army with old Pap Price and served until the surrender at Shreveport, La., and came home in June 1865. I bought a farm in the Moniteau creek bottom in 1865, and cleared up the bottom and cultivated it. I had a black-smith shop of my own and made my own Plows. I cut lumber from the stump and made four wagons ready to hitch to. I lived over 17 years on this place and then bought what was known as the Gill farm and lived on it -for over 17 years. I then bought property in Clarksburg and lived there about five months. My wife died in 1902 and I moved to R. P. Edwards', where I now make my home, spending some of the time with the Nelsons at Clarksburg, my other children living too far away for me to visit".
Mr. Rex is survived by five children who are: Mrs. M. M. Harvey, Glendora, Calif.; W. H. Rex. Owassa, Okla; G. A. Rex, Clarksburg and Mrs. M. T. Nelson, of Glendora, Calif. Another daughter, Mrs. W. P. Whitlow, of Eaton, Colo. died January 9, 1916; and another daughter died in infancy. Mr. Rex is also survived by forty grandchildren and sixty great-grandchildren, also a half-brother, W. Y. Hommel, of Glendora Calif.
Mr. Rex was in good health almost up to the time of his death and was of an industrious nature that kept him active all his life. He was a great reader and was well versed in the scriptures. He lived an exemplary Christian life and his influence was always for good and his life was not only a long one but was one well spent. Several years ago Mr. Rex fell heir to a large estate of a half-brother in the state of California, amounting to between $75,000 and $100,000, and left all his children well fixed financially. The Eagle joins the many friends of this grand old pioneer Christian in extending sincere ,sympathy to the bereaved relatives
