David Hurst Shock, son of John Shock and Mary "Polly" Shely, was born March 8, 1800. On August 7, 1823 he married Cynthia Gibson in Missouri. David and Cynthia settled on land about 5 miles north of his father's farm, in an area that is now called Prathersville. David and Cynthia raised 13 children.
David was a successful farmer, blacksmith, and mill operator and well thought of in the community. In 1839 David and two of his brothers were named among the 869 original donors, "The Founding Families", which helped secure the finances to build the University of Missouri in Columbia. David was a Deason and a long time member of the Rocky Fork Primitive Baptist Church at Hinton, which was organized June 1821.

Cynthia Gibson-Shock and David Shock were married in Howard County on August 7, 1823. Cynthia was born on June 16, 1805, the daughter of Major Martin Gibson and Patience Burk. It is believed that the Gibson and Shock families migrated to Missouri in a wagon train of several families from Kentucky.
Cynthia and John had thirteen children: John M. b. Aug. 16. 1824; Zerelda Ann b. April 4, 1826; James Hurst b.Nov. 28, 1827; Hawkins G. b. Nov. 29, 1829; Martha Elizabeth b. Obituary: Joe Crews

Joe K. Crews, 87, of Columbia died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at Boone Hospital Center.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Jesse Barnhart and Bill Smith officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home. Mr. Crews was born Sept. 7, 1911, in Boone County to Robert Emmett and Susan King Crews. He married Louise Bittle on Oct. 7, 1935, in Boonville, and she preceded him in death. He was a member of New Providence Baptist Church. He graduated from Hickman High School and was a cook at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center for 36 years. Survivors include a daughter, Jane Sapp of Columbia; a sister, Martha Holt of Columbia; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, four sisters and a great-grandchild. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 1 Broadway, Suite C-1, Columbia, Mo., 65203.

I have found that others have listed Aaron King b.1850 and Hannah Dyer b.1850 as James parents.

I have to question whether James King born 17 Oct 1796 is a member of this family.
James was born in Breckinridge county and all the others siblings where born in Madison county.
I looked at a map and see that was a long distance to travel in those days. The James in this family must have been someone else.
