In the name of God Amen: I ALEXANDER BRUCE, SEN of Nottoway County being of sound mind and memory, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, Vidz:
I lend unto my beloved wife Ann Bruce during her life one half the land whereon I now live, including the houses, also the negroes as follows, Tom, Doll, and John, including the household and kitchen furniture with five head of choice horses with all my cattle, sheep & hogs except five head of cattle to my son Woodson Bruce & one feather bead and furniture. One horse & two negroes, named Peter and Isham with the other half of my land, whereon I now live not devised to my wife Ann, to him and his heirs forever.
I give unto my son Alex Bruce the land whereon he now lives, to him and his heirs forever.
The land devised to my beloved wife Ann Bruce I give after her death to my son James Bruce, to him and his heirs forever, with one negro named Jesse.
I give to my daughter Lucy Bruce one negro girle named Silva.
I give unto my daughter Janey Bruce one negro girle named Mollie, to her and her heirs forever.
My household and kitchen furniture with my stock of all kind to be divided between my three youngest children as my beloved wife may think proper as they become of lawfull age or marry, that is to say, to Lucy, James and Janey Bruce (also the 3 negroes Tom, Doll & John to be divided between my three youngest children before mentioned).
I give unto my son Lemuel Bruce one negro boy named Charles, to him and his heirs forever.
I give unto my son Armsted Bruce one negro boy named Dick, to him and his heirs forever.
I give unto my daughter Ridley Ellington one negro girle named Agga, to her and her heirs forever.
The residue of my negroes with every other property not yet devised to be equally divided between my children as follows, Prudence Hudson, Rachel Clay, Polley Cushenbury and Lemuel Bruce, Alex Bruce, Armsted Bruce, Woodson Bruce, James Bruce, Lucy Bruce, and Janey Brue when my youngest daughter becomes of lawful age or marryes, to them and their heirs forever.
It is my will and desire that my stud horse be sold by my Executors to pay my just debts.

In the name of God, amen. The thirteenth day of January in the year of our
Lord 1775 Joseph Jons of Sant James Southam in the county of Cumberland
being very sick and weake in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be
given unto God for the same and calling to mind the mortality of my body and
knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die to make and ordain this
my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all I
give and recommend my soul into the Lands of God that gave it and for my
body I recommend it to the Earth to be buried in a Christianlike and decent
manner at the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the General
Resurection I shall receive this amiagan (?) by the mighty Jesus (?) of God
and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath please God to bless me
in this life I give desire and dispose of the same in the following manner
and form.
In primis: I lend to my dearly beloved wife Jane Jons my tract of land
whereon I now live douring her natrell life or widowhood and then to be
divided between my too eldest sons William Johns & Joseph Johns.
