Ernest Preston Payne passed away in El Reno, Oklahoma on Monday October 2, 2006, at the age of 96. Ernest was born May 9, 1910, in Stratford, Oklahoma to George and Elizabeth Payne. He was a member and served as elder several years at the Lindsay Church of Christ. He loved hard work, fishing, gardening, the pecan orchard trees, raising birds and working on the World Bible School program. He enjoyed playing the fiddle, visiting with friends and attending church services and meetings. Ernest faithfully attended church through out his childhood and adulthood years, until three weeks ago. He learned carpentry from Uncle Theo and built several homes.
Ernest married Ethel Stinnett on March 4, 1933, and was happily married for 71 years. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents, and one brother, Bill Payne.
Ernest is survived by four children; Virginia Pratt of Hinton, Oklahoma, Leon Payne of Lindsay, Oklahoma, Delmar Payne of Lindsay, Oklahoma, and Howard Payne of Gaylord, Michigan, one brother, Homer Payne, and one sister, Grace Hughes . Ernest also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild and a host of friends.
Services for Ernest will be held on Thursday October 5, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of Christ. Brant Stubblefield and James Cudd will be officiating the service. Interment will be at Green Hill Cemetery in Lindsay, Oklahoma. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of B. G. Boydston Funeral Home in Lindsay, Oklahoma.
