Notes for William LOGGINS

Ramsey reports William Loggins was among those settling on the north bank of the Cumberland River in 1780. He states that some of the names were from "Haywood."

Court action was required to free a claim to land for heirs of William Loggins, who died intestate. A subsequent filing in 1826 indicates that Samuel died, leaving his children, Nathaniel, Alpha, Eliza, Jane, and Nancy.

"The River Counties Quarterly" by Jill K. Garrett, Pub., Columbia, Tennessee Vol. 1 No. 2, p. 130, states that William Loggins was killed in Montgomery Co., Tenn. John Rutlege was tried and found guilty Feb. 17, 1817.

Alpha Loggins was born February 7, 1823 in Wayne County, Tennessee. Little is known of her early life. She moved with her husband to Texas. After his death, she raised her family and lived with children after they had grown. Several went to Markley, Young County, Texas. She died there on April 4, 1906, of "La Gripp".

Ruth Nisbet relays her recollections:
"Alpha Loggins Stinnett, I remember seeing one time. Very small with black sparkling eyes and wisps of curly hair slipping from under a white lace trimmed cap which she wore. Sitting in a wheel chair, with such big wheels! With these she managed to maneuver about in the house doing all sorts of things, some cooking, sewing, knitting and piecing quilts. Her youngest son, George, lived with her and cared for her as long as she lived. The accident happened as she was milking, the cow kicked her, throwing her off the stool and breaking her hip so badly that it couldn't be fixed. For years (fifteen comes to mind) she lived in the wheel chair, good natured and happy, worrying that she was so much trouble."

Cleburne Morning Review
March 23, 1911 - Thursday
Page 5

DROPPED DEAD IN FORT WORTH
Cleburne man sinks down at the West Brook Hotel--Remains to be shipped here.
Mr. Steve Howell, brother of James Howell of the City Wagonyard of this city, dropped dead at Ft. Worth yesterday morning at 9 o'clock and the remains will be sent home for interment.
Mr. Howell had been staying with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Chapman, at Jim Davis' for some time, and had been under the care of a physician. He had been making liberal use of the Davis spring water and seemed to be rapidly improving. He decided to go to Fort Worth to look after selling some property and been there several days.
Justice Mahon, of Ft. Worth, brought in the verdict that the deceased had come to his death from natural causes. He had reached the advanced age of 70 years and had been under treatment for Brights Disease, in this city. Hence, it may be assumed that death was due to both old age and disease.
From James Davis last night, it was learned that the deceased was the grandfather of 48 children. His wife is dead, but he leaves children here and at other points in Johnson County, Ft. Worth, and other Places. He was the uncle of Frank Howell, the pharmaceutical expert at Jeff Campsey's Drug Store, also of Owen Howell of the Santa Fe office.

===========================================================================

The many friends of the deceased will join this paper in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.

In Consultation
Frank Howell stated last night that relatives had gone to Ft. Worth and the matter of shipping the Remains of Mr. Steve Howell to this city would be considered. The remains being in a dropsical condition, and not easily embalmed, it may be necessary to bring them here by private conveyance.

CHARLIE FINLEY WAS BORN SEPTEMBER 1, 1904 TO FRANK AND ELIZABETH SOPHORNIA PERKINS FINLEY AT GRAVEL HILL, TEXAS. He attended school in the Gravel Hill community school. At some point his family moved into Springtown, Texas but Charlie and his twin (Hanks) returned to the farm in their sixteenth year. Their older brother and his wife- Willie and Bertha-lived on the farm at that time but eventually left the farm to the care of Charlie and Hanks. One day the twins were chasing cows when Charlie's horse went under a telephone wire. Charlie was jerked from his horse and some of his teeth were knocked out. He went without teeth until 1945 when at last he obtained a set of "store bought teeth" as Charlie was fond of calling them. Charlie earned his living mostly farming and ranching until the 1950's when he went to work at Justin Feed Mill. Later he worked in a canning factory in Denton until he had to retire for medical reasons in 1965. He had postate cancer and inspite of surgery, it spread through out his body.
